Old School opens next Saturday!

cover for Old School, designed by Janine Vangool

As you might remember from my previous post, I am doing a piece for the Old School show at Uppercase Gallery. If I didn't mention it before, Janine Vangool (owner of Uppercase), decided to publish a book to accompany the show. The book is available for preview and pre-order and the work that everyone did looks amazing. I just love the cover she designed - especially the one-of-a-kind pencil that she included. I wasn't sure if my work would end up in the book, but I am thrilled (and honored) to say that she included my blocks! Check it out!

check it out - it's my spread!

I sent her a couple of pictures so she could pick what, if anything, to include. To my delight, she picked all four pictures and arranged them on one page. I love it!

I also love the one-of-a-kind details that Janine has created to emphasize the theme of the show. Like the pencil above, she created these wonderful clipboards that will be what showcases the artwork in the show. Brilliant! I just love details like this because it makes the entire show experience that much more memorable, too. It moves it beyond just the artwork and focuses in on the aesthetic of the origin of the artwork. In other words, it's as much about Old School ephemera as it is about the work created from it. I think that's really cool.

6-sided Stories • 6X6 inch box with 9 blocks, each 1.75X1.75 inches square, mixed media, 2008

Here's my final piece, pictured in one of the many arrangements that can be created. I had a lot of fun with these blocks and am pretty happy with how they turned out. Dated from 1890s-1920s, they were pretty fragile to work with. I really like how they're not all exactly the same size and how you can tell that someone obviously played with them quite a bit. Hopefully, they will find a happy new home to live in. For more pictures of my piece and the individual blocks, check out the Old School Set on my flickr page.

Old School opens Saturday, August 23, 2008 at Uppercase Gallery. For more info and/or details, please visit Uppercase. The show runs through September 30, 2008.
