Nutz + Boltz: sneak peek #3

the robot danced / 9X12 inches • spray paint and enamel on chalkboard • 2008

It's been a LONG time since I've used spray paint... even longer since I last cut a stencil... but today I did both and had a lot of fun in the process. When I saw these fun chalkboards recently at U.S. Toy, I immediately had an idea for them. While I really didn't intend to create this piece (and the two that accompany it) for the Nutz + Boltz show, I was so itching to try to do this that I just ended up doing it in the middle of the day today (when I should have been doing any number of other things to pack up my work). While the stencils are pretty basic, they keep the pieces simple which is exactly what I wanted.

Perhaps it's from having just finished my piece for Old School that my eyes are noticing educational ephemera and supplies. Maybe it's because classes are starting up again across the country and school supplies are abundant everywhere in nearly every store! Going to the store with my mom to buy new paper and pencils (and a cool, new pencil case!) was always one of my favorite things to do. Now, years later, I seem to get that same thrill from places like U.S. Toy!

Such a great idea Maura! I love the chalkboard and US Toys! And I love how the orange and green look together!

I recently spray painted a big bookcase for my studio and it took me 5 cans... I felt so high afterward from the lovely fumes... heehee.
